Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape is encouraging businesses to harness innovative technology to grow.
The prime minister made the comment at the opening of the first Innovation PNG 2019 Conference in Port Moresby on Friday.
He said PNG had a lot of potential but it would not be marketed well without the use of innovative thinking and technology.
“Accessing the Asian market can be made possible with the right infrastructure set up to harness, interface and link with the Asian market right next door to us,” Marape said.
“We (the government) intend to connect electricity and ICT to 70 per cent of our country in the next five years.
“We are encouraging those of you who have businesses here, you are not in the wrong place.”
The prime minister urged businesses to remain in the country, focus their innovative minds on growing their business to access the Asian markets.
Marape said there was a growing niche market for the affluent and rich who were looking for a better quality of life.
Those who have money in the world will be looking for few things, they will be looking for organic food, clean water, fresh air, rest and recreation.
“The organic food market in the world is estimated at K3.21 trillion (USD 1 trillion) and Papua New Guinea can tap into that through the use of technology as well as conservation of some of the pristine environment here; “a place that offers organic food, clean air, rest and recreation, cultural interface.
“That is the niche market that Papua New Guinea has to offer to the affluent population.
“We can be a place that offers the world a healthy lifestyle,” he said.
The prime minister said PNG had 6-7 per cent of the world’s biodiversity and also urged pharmaceutical companies to utilise innovative ideas and technologies in the space of research, science and technology to produce PNG-made medicines.
