In order to protect the bank and its customers from financial crimes such as identity theft and fraud, Bank South Pacific (BSP) has launched its Biometrics Registration which is now being rolled out to customers from December 2019 onwards in all its branches nationwide.
In launching biometrics registration this week, Group General Manager - Retail, Paul Thornton said that "financial crimes such as 'Identity theft' are increasingly becoming a problem around the world and in Papua New Guinea. To help to protect customer identity, BSP will be requesting our new and existing customers to register their biometrics (fingerprints) at their respective branches."
On a BSP customer's next visit to the branch, BSP team will register their fingerprints after providing verifiable identification documents. The customer will be required to scan two fingers, index and middle, simultaneously. This process is repeated for both left and right hands. The BSP's system will automatically enrol the customer after checking the database for duplicate fingerprints or account identifiers. Thereafter, the customer can verify their identity by simply scanning their enrolled fingers.
Mr Thornton said that this can be done when a customer comes into our BSP branches to request for a new or replacement card, apply for a loan and/or conduct other important banking transaction, "we can then check and register their fingerprint and confirm their identity."
He said that biometrics is being implemented to also meet regulatory requirements to improve the bank process of "Know Your Customer" and for safe and secure transactions.
"We encourage all BSP customers to co-operate with our BSP Team to register their fingerprints in their next visit to a BSP branch," concluded Mr Thornton.
