Online shopping deliveries replace postal products in PNG

POST PNG chief executive officer Peter Tepure says the decline in business’ postal products due to technology trends and social media in the last decade is being replaced by online shopping deliveries.
Tepure said the trend on the use of technology was starting to increase at a rate of 12 per cent per year.
“It is a trend that maybe, in the next five to 10 years, you will see a good number of Papua New Guineans ordering online,” he said.

“These days it’s the expatriate community and few of the elite Papua New Guineans.
“Technology is changing our business.
“Technology is what we should be embracing to take the business to the next level.
“As you see, a lot of people are shifting away from the traditional mail, but what is really emerging in the postal market is you have a lot of people ordering things online.
“Ordering things online is using modern technology but we still need a physical place to collect your parcels.
“In bigger postal operations, you will find that the decline in postal products is substituted with the increase in parcels.
“In PNG it is slightly different, not everyone has or trust that if I order something from China, it will be here.
“But as people start using Facebook, other social media, we see the trend is starting to increase.”
Tepure said Papua New Guineans should start to tap into online buying.
“A lot of Papua New Guineans think that a credit card belongs to someone who travels overseas,” he said.
