Papua New Guinea has reduced internet prices significantly but this price reduction is not applied to the consumers.  The country's Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) Commission (ICCC) has asked the Internet service providers in Papua New Guinea  to justify why retail internet prices in the country are still high when there is a 60 per cent reduction with wholesale internet rates.

Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) Commissioner and chief executive officer Paulus Ain recently said that PNG DataCo Limited has done a 60 per cent reduction on wholesale internet rates, but ICCC checks with retailers (Internet Services Providers) has proven otherwise with ISPs not passing on the reduction to the consumers, from the reduction they are getting from the wholesaler.

“ICCC is currently writing to all ISPs to justify to ICCC why these prices are not being passed down to the end consumers and an investigation into this issue is in progress,” Mr Ain said.    He said ICCC has also checked with the National Information and Communication Technology Authority (NICTA) on what they are doing in getting the results out to the consumers as they are responsible for setting and regulating the internet prices.

Mr Ain said NICTA is undertaking its own investigation to ensure internet price reductions are passed on to the consumers.    “ICCC have written to the ISPs and a few ISPs have responded and stated that they are currently facing or struggling with certain issues.”    Mr Ain added that ICCC is working on the issue of high internet prices and ICCC will let consumers and the public know as the process is complete.
