SpaceX has revealed plans to extend its Starlink satellite internet services to Papua New Guinea, aiming to enhance digital connectivity in the region. Andrew Matlock, SpaceX’s Director of Enterprise Sales, announced this initiative during the PNG Resource Week in Sydney, emphasizing the company’s ongoing discussions with the National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) to facilitate operations in the country.

As a leader in space innovation, SpaceX, established by Elon Musk, has redefined space exploration with cutting-edge technologies like the Falcon 9 reusable rockets and the upcoming Starship. These advancements have significantly lowered costs and increased accessibility for space-related ventures. Starlink is central to SpaceX's mission to close the digital gap by providing fast and reliable internet access to underserved communities globally.
Matlock underscored Starlink’s role in addressing the digital divide, noting that many areas around the world lack adequate internet services. “There’s a third of the world without any internet access and another third where connectivity is unreliable. We’re determined to change this,” he said.
The Starlink network consists of thousands of satellites in low-Earth orbit, forming a robust infrastructure capable of delivering high-speed internet to remote and hard-to-reach locations. SpaceX has already deployed over 7,200 satellites, enabling nearly five million users worldwide to benefit from its services.
Matlock highlighted the company’s focus on navigating regulatory requirements to ensure accessibility in new markets like Papua New Guinea. “It’s not just about deploying the technology; it’s about making it available to the people. That requires significant work with local regulatory authorities,” he explained.
The rollout of Starlink in Papua New Guinea is expected to bring transformative benefits, particularly in education, commerce, and economic development. By improving internet access, the service could provide unprecedented opportunities for communities across the country, fostering growth in regions traditionally underserved by conventional communication networks.
