PNG University Graduates Urged to Lead in Tech Innovation

At the University of Papua New Guinea’s (UPNG) 70th graduation ceremony held at Sir John Guise Stadium, Prime Minister James Marape called on 184 Science graduates to harness technology and innovation to drive progress in Papua New Guinea and beyond. Speaking to a new generation of tech-savvy professionals, Marape emphasized the critical role of STEM education in shaping a digital future.

“The world runs on technology,” Marape stated. “Your UPNG education equips you to innovate, compete globally, and contribute to PNG’s growth.” He encouraged graduates to pursue opportunities in software development, data science, and emerging fields like artificial intelligence, both locally and internationally.

Marape, a UPNG alumnus (class of ’94), shared his own journey as an “average student” who succeeded through dedication. “Hard work and belief in yourself will open doors in tech industries,” he said, urging graduates to explore roles in PNG’s growing digital economy or seek opportunities abroad in tech hubs.

The Prime Minister outlined the government’s vision for a K200 billion economy within a decade, fueled by investments in education and technology. Initiatives like the Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP) aim to make STEM education more accessible, preparing graduates for jobs in software engineering, cybersecurity, and tech entrepreneurship. “We’re building a tech ecosystem to create jobs and drive innovation,” Marape said.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Dr. Cecilia Nembou was commended for her leadership in aligning UPNG’s curriculum with global tech standards. Marape reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering international-quality education to produce graduates ready for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

As PNG expands its tech infrastructure, including improved internet connectivity and digital services, UPNG graduates are poised to lead in areas like mobile app development, e-commerce, and renewable energy tech. Marape’s message was clear: “Find your space in the tech world and shape the future.”
