PNG MiBank introduces SevisWallet mobile banking services

Papua New Guineans can now carry out banking transactions from their mobile phones following the launch of new services integrated into the SevisWallet App.

Acting ICT Minister Hon. Peter Tsiamalili Jr. announced the development, saying the initiative allows users to open MiBank accounts, transfer money, receive funds, and purchase mobile credit digitally.

He said the service is being delivered through a partnership between the Department of ICT and MiBank, designed to expand access to financial tools across the country.

The Minister highlighted that financial exclusion remains a serious issue in PNG, with an estimated majority of citizens still without access to formal banking services.

He pointed out that rural communities are the most affected, where access to physical banking infrastructure is limited or non-existent.

However, he said the widespread use of mobile phones offers a strong platform to bridge the gap and deliver essential services through digital channels.

The integration enables secure account creation using SevisPass biometric verification, peer-to-peer transfers through verified identities, direct deposits into MiBank accounts, and mobile airtime top-ups.

Mr Tsiamalili said the move forms part of the Government’s wider digital transformation agenda aimed at improving efficiency and accessibility of services.

“This initiative is part of our broader Digital Government agenda to deliver fast, simple, and accessible services to our citizens. At the same time, it directly supports our national financial inclusion objectives by removing barriers to participation in the formal economy,” he said.
