How to keep yourself safe online

It’s cyber security week this week and as technology evolves, so too does the way people use it. Not everyone on the internet is as nice as they appear!

Cyber security is the about protecting systems, networks and programs from digital attacks.

Here are some ways to keep yourself safe online

  •  Upsize your passwords, long and strong passwords are much harder for attackers to crack.
  • Create a passphrase, that’s a string of four or more words as it’s easier to remember and is stronger than a random mix of letters, numbers and symbols.
  • Use different passwords on each account
  • Use two-factor authentication where you can, it’s a simple extra step to log in like using a thumb print or entering an app generated code.
  •  Keep a check on what info you share online. We’re so used to sharing things online that we often don’t think how it might affect our privacy. Actions like having your social accounts set to ‘friends only’ and only using required information when signing up to new accounts will limit the amount of extra information that attackers could use to impersonate you online.
  • When you’re alerted to an update for your device, don’t ignore it — install it as soon as possible. As well as adding new features, updates keep bugs and viruses out and fix security risks that attackers can use to gain access to your information.
