20 Papua New Guineans Graduate with Certificate in Cyber Security

20 Papua New Guineans from various government departments and private institutions graduated with Certificate in Cyber Security last week after going through a three-month cyber-security course Tier 1 and Tier 2.

Department of Information and Communication Technology Secretary, Steven Matainaho said under the MoU for Cyber Security signed by the two governments almost five years ago, further assistance was given by the Australian government to operationalize the National Cyber Security Shelter project.

The National Cyber Security Centre, which was jointly funded by the Australian and PNG governments, aims to enable Papua New Guinea to benefit from advanced communications technology while protecting its critical information and communications technology infrastructure from cyber incidents.

Department of Information and Communications Technology Secretary, Steven Matainaho, while presenting the certificates thanked the Australian government for the continuous support provided in the space of cyber security in PNG.

“This event not only recognizes the recipients as having skills in cyber security but also affirms PNG governments’ commitment to the ongoing partnership with Australian government in the area of cyber security in PNG”

“In the longer term, training like this will enable Papua New Guinea to build its digital economy from a strong and secure position” Secretary Matainaho said.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology is taking cyber security agenda seriously with its goal to drive transformation in the country.

This is evident with the Department formulating and getting the Cyber Security Policy endorsed by the cabinet last year (2021).

The cyber security training is part of the Department’s overall vision to create a safer digital economy for everyone.
