PNG and Pacific Countries facing cyber security threats

PAPUA New Guinea and fellow Pacific Island nations have a lot of work to do to deal with the challenges and connectivity gaps related to cyber security and environment threats, says a minister.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Minister Timothy Masiu told a Pacific ICT ministers’ dialogue in Port Moresby yesterday that they must implement the right ICT policies to keep their countries safe from the challenges and threats.

He admitted that PNG itself still had a lot to do in terms of ensuring cyber security in the country.

“We have a lot more issues like social media.

“The ICT sector is looking at more improvement and changes to keep our country safe from cyber security (threats),” Masiu said. Masiu said the Information and Communications Technology Ministry was formulating policies to address the challenges, which would be submitted to Cabinet.

“And of course, we must put in the right equipment and policies to keep our country safe from cyber security and other challenges,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said the signing of the Lagatoi Declaration “reaffirms the ongoing commitment for a well-connected Pacific through digital infrastructure and services”.

The declaration focuses on six areas: Digital transformation, digital innovation and entrepreneurship, digital infrastructure, digital security and trust, digital capacity building and skills development, and regional cooperation and representation.
