The workshop explored AI's role in national development, showcasing China’s AI ecosystem, which includes over 2,400 enterprises and 120 large language models. PNG is taking inspiration from China’s phased AI growth, now focused on turning research into commercial solutions such as TrackAI for inclusive healthcare.
PNG aims to build its own innovation cluster to support local startups and patent generation. These efforts align with the country’s AI Strategy under the PNG Digital Government Act 2022 and support regional goals outlined in the Lagatoi Declaration.
Future plans may involve partnerships with Chinese institutions like Tsinghua University and funding support from international sources such as the UN’s Global Fund on AI, helping PNG bridge capacity gaps and lead digital transformation in the Pacific.
