Minister Tsiamalili said the move was unprecedented, as it is the first time in PNG’s history that radio frequency spectrum will be allocated through a market-based mechanism. He stressed that this reflects the Marape-Rosso Government’s vision to strengthen digital infrastructure while aligning with global standards.
The 2600 MHz band has been released for 5G services, which the minister said would bring vast opportunities for innovation, business investment, and inclusive growth. He noted that faster and more reliable Internet access is essential to support everyday needs and future technological advancements.
According to the minister, the deployment of 5G will enhance service delivery across sectors such as health, education, business, and government. He added that improved connectivity would also help build productivity and open the door to private networks and digital service solutions.
Minister Tsiamalili acknowledged the leadership of the National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA), which carried out consultations with stakeholders before the announcement. He praised the regulator for its role in ensuring transparency and inclusiveness throughout the process.
The release of the spectrum follows approval by the NICTA Board in July 2025. The minister concluded that the adoption of 5G technology would transform mobile broadband and lay the foundation for PNG’s next stage of digital growth.
