NBC Launches Online Radio Service for Papua New Guinea’s Digital Age

The National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has officially launched its NBC Radio Online service, marking a significant step into the digital era of broadcasting. The event, themed “for the DIGITAL AGE,” took place on Friday morning from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the NBC Broadcast Haus, 5 Mile, in Port Moresby.

Acting Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Minister Peter Tsiamalili Jr said the new service allows listeners to enjoy NBC programming anytime and anywhere through any internet-connected device. He noted the launch follows the commissioning of NBC Digital Television on December 6, 2024, at the same location by ICT Minister Timothy Masiu.

Mr. Tsiamalili highlighted that internet radio addresses the rapidly changing ways people consume media, with growing demand for convenience, variety, and instant access. “NBC Internet Radio answers that call by offering a seamless streaming experience featuring live shows, exclusive content, music channels, and news updates, all created with the quality and integrity that NBC is known for,” he said.

He emphasized that NBC Online Radio requires no special installation or storage space. “Just open your web browser on any device—smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop—and start streaming immediately,” Mr. Tsiamalili explained. “This approach reflects NBC's commitment to accessibility and innovation, removing friction so audiences can connect with content wherever and whenever they want.”

The acting ICT Minister said the initiative represents more than a technological upgrade. “It signifies our commitment to evolving with the times while honoring our heritage. We are empowering our listeners with greater choice and flexibility and opening new doors for creativity and engagement,” he stated.

He also revealed that NBC plans to enhance interactivity for its audience. “We will endeavor to make NBC Radio interactive and engaging for our listeners. We will further introduce tools that will enable our listeners to engage live with our presenters while they are on air,” Mr. Tsiamalili added.

NBC Board members, stakeholders, and senior management attended the launch, expressing enthusiasm for the broadcaster’s new digital direction and pledging support to drive the initiative forward.
