Additionally, Meta earns from Click-to-WhatsApp ads on Facebook and Instagram, where businesses pay for advertisements that drive users directly into WhatsApp chats. In emerging markets, Meta is also developing WhatsApp Pay and other commerce features, which could generate income through transaction fees. Together, these strategies turn WhatsApp into a major revenue stream while keeping personal messaging free for users.
WhatsApp itself is free to use (no ads inside chats), but Facebook (now Meta) makes money from WhatsApp in several indirect ways:
- 1. WhatsApp Business App
Businesses can create free profiles on WhatsApp to interact with customers.
While basic use is free, the real money comes when companies need to scale.
- 2. WhatsApp Business API
Large companies (banks, airlines, e-commerce, etc.) pay to use the WhatsApp Business API.
Meta charges businesses per conversation/message when they send notifications like order confirmations, boarding passes, or customer service updates.
Example: An airline can send you flight updates through WhatsApp but pays Meta a fee each time.
- 3. Click-to-WhatsApp Ads
On Facebook and Instagram, businesses can run ads with a “Click to WhatsApp” button.
Meta earns revenue because businesses pay for those ads.
This helps connect businesses directly with customers through WhatsApp.
- 4. Future Payments & Commerce
Meta is pushing WhatsApp Pay (in India, Brazil, and other markets).
Eventually, it may take transaction fees for payments made within WhatsApp (similar to how WeChat makes money in China).
