PAPUA New Guinea is set to receive a major boost in internet connectivity after the United States Government announced plans to provide US$30 million for satellite internet services across the country.

The funding is expected to help connect remote schools, rural health facilities and disaster centres that continue to face communication challenges because of difficult terrain and limited infrastructure.

Acting Minister for Information and Communications Technology Hon. Peter L. Tsiamalili Jr., OBE, MP welcomed the announcement following the second United States–Papua New Guinea Strategic Partnership Dialogue.

“I welcome the announcement by the Government of the United States of America of its intention to provide US$30 million for satellite internet connectivity in Papua New Guinea,” Mr Tsiamalili said.

He said the support would help improve access to education, healthcare, business opportunities and communication services for people living in isolated parts of the country.

“This is a timely and practical commitment. For Papua New Guinea, satellite internet can help bridge the connectivity gap for rural and remote communities where geography, cost and infrastructure challenges remain significant,” he said.

The ICT Ministry said the project forms part of wider efforts to improve digital access across PNG and ensure more communities are connected to online services and global markets.
