Blaming AI, PNG School Head Denies Wrongdoing in Mufti-Day Controversy

A PNG secondary school principal is blaming AI for misleading images linked to a mufti-day event that has led to calls for her suspension by Education Secretary Dr. Uke Kombra.

Junnie Samson, principal of Gerehu Secondary in Port Moresby, said no formal suspension notice had been received yet, but she and her deputy would accept any decision after investigations.

Dr. Kombra earlier condemned the students’ conduct as inappropriate, urging disciplinary measures and a review into how the event was planned.

He emphasized that PNG schools must set a moral standard and not tolerate behaviour that contradicts cultural values.

Samson defended the school event, saying it was designed with clear educational themes and fundraising goals, and added that images being circulated were fake and created using AI tools.

She explained that the dress code for students varied by grade level—ranging from sportswear to cultural attire and career-focused uniforms such as police and army gear.

She clarified that the uniforms were provided by parents and has since issued formal apologies to both the Police and Defence Forces for any perceived disrespect.
