The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT), the official custodian of the country’s .pg domain, has received a K40,000 payment from the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to support the registration and management of government domains.
The payment was presented on Friday, July 11, 2025, by DICT’s Acting GovCloud Manager, Lizarh-Marie Warike, during a brief ceremony with Vice Chancellor Professor Ora Renagi in Lae. The funding covers the registration of approximately 345 government domains for the 2023–2024 period and includes costs related to redelegation of existing .gov.pg domains.
Professor Renagi acknowledged the support, noting the significance of DICT’s contribution to PNGUoT’s digital services. “We are grateful for this financial support. It reflects the government’s recognition of the important ICT role PNGUoT plays in national development,” he said.
He also announced that the university’s Domain Name System (DNS) management platform is now fully automated, allowing for streamlined registration and application processes for .pg domains.
While addressing the cost structure, Professor Renagi hinted at potential changes in domain fees. “The university council has directed us to review the current fee structure. While .gov.pg domains may remain unaffected, we’re looking into revising rates for .com.pg domains, which are used for commercial profit,” he stated.
In addition to its role in domain management, PNGUoT is advancing international collaborations through its newly established Office of Strategic Internalization. The initiative aims to enhance the university’s capacity by leveraging global resources to elevate ICT standards and services.
With all five of its engineering programs recently accredited, PNGUoT is positioning itself as a technology leader in the higher education sector. Professor Renagi added that continued funding from DICT will strengthen the university’s ICT infrastructure and support its growth trajectory.
