Naturally Engineered Foot Bridge Measuring 700 Meters in Length found in PNG

Traditional Technology at work : This locally engineered Cane Bridge is located in Bulolo, Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea

It was initiated by Governor Saonu of Morobe Province.


For many years, lots of people had lost their lives with their cargoes while trying to cross the Mighty Mrkham River when there was no foot bridge.

The locals used to built several foot bridges year after year, however, the mighty Markham River flows in all directions and wipe out every foot bridges.

The footbridge initiated by the Morobe Provincial Government measures 700 metres in length.

The cane bridge connects major economic infrastructure where it links economy activities such as coffee, cocoa, timber and other significant economic resources of Morobe Province.”

Building the foot bridge was a key project delivered by Morobe Provincial Government to enhance economic activity in this particular society where the society has been seen so significant in terms of producing cash crops.

Governor Saonu has spearheaded a strong discussion with the Deputy Governor for Morobe, Willie Simbirsk and Fourteen (14) Ward Councilors of Onga- Waffa LLG and built the longest footbridge across the Mighty Markham River connecting Mutzing Station and Onga- Waffa LLG.

Teridze cane bridge is used by villages of Teridze, Sako, Tiaura in Garaina area of Wau Bulolo District Morobe Province. More than 10, 0000 people in those respective places access the foot bridge

The cane bridge is built across the Markham River where the Onga - Waffa are more safe then before to cross the Mighty Markham River.

Governor Saonu said, "Crossing the mighty Markham River will be a thing of the past for the people of Onga- Waffa Local Level Government area of Markham District.

“The people of Onga –Waffa and Markham have suffered too long for a connection to ensure they are secured to cross the bridge without the risk of the dangers of the flood from Markham River.” Saonu added.

"I am pleased with the backing of the Deputy Governor and the respective ward councilors emphasizing that such collaboration of team work is vital for service delivery.


“The footbridge serve over 10,000 plus people and the flow of economic, social and other vital services such as health and education,”.

“Such needed vital interventions improve the livelihood of people going forward and MPG is keen to identify such more interventions in Morobe Province and progress them onwards. Saonu added.

Saonu said, "More projects in infrastructure development is timely in Morobe Province and urged the people to be patience and work with MPG to ensure these development agendas come into fruition.

Saonu further expressed his sorrow for many lives with cargoes that have been lost over many years while trying to cross the Markham River.

"Inga - Waffa LLG is the home of Markham MP, Konni Iguan and Deputy Governor Wille Simbisi.

Therefore I emphasize the need for Markham DDA to work closely with Morobe Provincial Government to deliver the needed services to the people into the feature." Saonu added.
