The Government Domain of Papua New Guinea (.gov.pg ) is an important digital resource reserved exclusively for government departments and agencies to host their services in the country.
It is the domain name that identifies government websites, emails and provides links to government announcements. It is a part of the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) that specifies the location of a specific webpage in the vastness of the internet.
All domain names consist of two main parts: the top-level domain (TLD) and the second-level domain. The TLD is the suffix that follows the last dot in the domain name (e.g., .com, .org, .net, .pg). The second-level domain is the main part of the name that comes before the TLD (e.g., Google, Wikipedia, amazon, etc.).
The top-level domain name (.pg) for PNG is used by all organizations operating in the country and is managed by the PNG University of Technology. The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is the mandated department to host all Government domain names (.gov.pg
). The naming convention for all government domains is standardized as follows, departmentname.gov.pg
.The government domain is aligned with the Digital Government Act 2022 and the Digital Transformation Policy, which intends to enhance the quality of government services delivery, improve efficiency, and promote transparency and accountability through the use of digital technology.
As per the Digital Government Act 2022, and the established MOU between the PNG Unitech and the Department of Information & Communications Technology, it is now a requirement for all government agencies and public bodies to redelegate all Domain Names (.gov.pg
) to the Government Cloud Platform on which the government domains are hosted. For any government department that will be registering a domain name may contact DICT for requirements and standards to follow.
ICT Directors, IT Managers, and IT Coordinators or the person that has oversight of or is responsible for ICT matters in a public body are referred to as Digital Transformation Officers (DTOs) and are now required by the Act to onboard their sanctioned domains to the Government Cloud.
This will provide the optimum data security and reliability, and helps government organizations to deliver more efficient and reliable services to citizens and businesses operating in the country.
The government domain hosted in the government private leased cloud platform provides a high level of credibility security and trust to government agencies, indicating that the hosting is being facilitated by legitimate government entities via top-notch technology. By using this domain, government agencies can showcase their legitimacy and build trust with citizens and businesses.
All government agencies operating in Papua New Guinea can now take advantage of the benefits offered by the domain and the possibilities of cloud technology.
