PNG DataCo will now provide services to the PNG University of Technology not only as a customer but also as a partner through which DataCo will benefit from the use of Unitech 03b satellite facilities in Lae for redundancy to ensure the National Transmission Network is robust and resilient.
The Service Agreement was signed between PNG DataCo Managing Director Paul Komboi and the University of Technology Vice Chancellor Dr Ora Renagi to allow the university to benefit from the low cost service.
DataCo is providing this broadband service with cost savings benefit to Unitech under its Community Services Obligation and Community Social Responsibility initiative for the education sector.
The details of the Service of Agreement include:
• primary service on Fibre;
• Redundant or backup over O3B Satellite; and
• DataCo to access the Unitech O3B Terminal for provision of redundant services to Lae and surrounding areas.
The university will start accessing services on 1st July 2019 and the arrangements will last for the next 36 months.
At the brief signing ceremony in Port Moresby, DataCo Managing Director Paul Komboi said DataCo’s Mission is to improve and expand affordable access to all people of PNG, through the development of the National Transmission Network (NTN).
“With the network that we are building with immense capacity across the country, our challenge is to ensure we drive demand to ensure the costs are shared by a larger base.”
“We believe that apart from assisting the next generation in their pursuit for knowledge and education through this service, we understand that the future demand will be driven by and will come from the current students who will enter the workforce and the business community,” Mr Komboi said.
“We cannot sit back and watch the next generation be deprived of the benefits of broadband internet in education due to unavailability and high cost barriers.”
Mr Komboi said the Government is keen to provide free Quality Education as a priority and we in DataCo have developed under our Community Service Obligation and Community Service Responsibility initiatives to ensure we provide quality service at cheaper prices to support the Government’s development agenda.
“DataCo believes that broadband internet access is a tool for learning, education and research. The Services should also be made available to the students outside of the laboratories and lecture halls to see the full benefit.”
He said the services were timely to make capacity available for the increased student population on campus.
Vice Chancellor for the PNG University of Technology, Dr. Ora Renagi said the university is thankful for the partnership agreement.
“We are happy with the approach as it provides best quality, reliable and accessible services to the institution because we want our students to use the services in their learning.”
Both Mr Komboi and Dr Renagi agreed that the service is a way forward in bridging the digital divide.
