PNG College Student Charged for Cyber Harassment and Extortion

A COLLEGE student in PNG's East New Britain Province  has been charged with cyber harassment and cyber extortion after allegedly asking a female student to send nude photos of her and then trying to extort money from her.

Police in Kokopo, East New Britain, arrested and charged the 30-year-old from Kiarifu village in Yangoru-Saussia, East Sepik, with two counts of cyber extortion and cyber harassment.

The man is a third year student at the Kabaleo Teachers College in Kokopo.

Police commander Chief Insp Joseph Tabali said the woman was also a third year student at the college.

Police allege that the man, using a fake account, lured the woman to send her photos for which she could be paid K3,000.

Chief Insp Tabali said the man allegedly used a fake account to receive the photos.

“After receiving the nude pictures, the suspect used his mobile phone number to send the woman a text message requesting K43,” he said.

“The number was new to her so she requested the identity of the owner.”

Police allege that the man then demanded that she should go to his room for sex otherwise he would post her nude photos on the internet. He demanded K300.

The woman reported the matter to the college management which forwarded it to police.
